Black Friday Photography Backdrops: What to Buy and When to Order

If you are looking for Black Friday photography backdrops, Chasing Stone holds a Black Friday sale at 25% off, and it is one of only two sales we hold all year, the other arriving in summer. At Chasing Stone, every backdrop and painted flat lay is hand painted in Orange County, California, by me, Jennifer Kidd, the founder and artist, on premium cotton canvas made to look and feel like old world stone and weathered plaster. In late autumn, when the light falls lower and warmer across old walls, this guide gathers everything I would want a fellow artist to know before the sale, from size and colorway to bundles, lead times, gifting and care.
Quick Answer
Black Friday photography backdrops from Chasing Stone are offered at 25% off during our Black Friday sale, one of only two sales we hold each year (the other is in summer). The dates and details are shared on chasingstone.com and with our mailing list when the sale begins. As of 2026, a hand painted backdrop is $497 for 5' x 8', $797 for 8' x 10' and $1,197 for 8' x 14' at regular price. Every backdrop is painted to order, so allow 5 to 7 business days of processing plus shipping time.
Does Chasing Stone Have a Black Friday Sale on Photography Backdrops?
Yes, Chasing Stone has a Black Friday sale, and it is 25% off. The Black Friday sale is one of only two sales Chasing Stone holds in a year, the first in summer and the second at Black Friday. Every backdrop in either sale is still painted to order by me, on premium cotton canvas, from materials sourced in the USA.
When the sale begins, its dates and details are shared on chasingstone.com and with everyone on our mailing list, which you can join at the bottom of any page on the site. Those two places will always hold the accurate details, and they are where I would look first.
If you have been wondering where to buy hand painted backdrops on Black Friday, Chasing Stone backdrops are sold on chasingstone.com, each one painted by hand to order in Orange County, California. The rest of this guide is written so that you know which pieces belong in your kit before the sale opens. A backdrop is a long companion in a working studio, and it is worth choosing calmly, with your own space, your own light and the sessions you already book held clearly in mind.
As of 2026, the collection holds 24 backdrop colorways, each named for a stone or mineral, in three approximate sizes: 5' x 8' at $497, 8' x 10' at $797 and 8' x 14' at $1,197. Alongside them are 15 hand painted flat lay colorways, each named for a place near or faraway, in Petite (approximately 26" x 20", $145) and Standard (approximately 35" x 28", $165). Our stain resistant fabric flat lays, in vegan wool and textured velvet, are $125 each. If you are weighing what makes a canvas worth its price, our guide to telling a quality canvas backdrop from a cheap one walks through what to look for.
Which Backdrop Size Should You Buy on Black Friday?
For most portrait photographers who want full length frames of one or two people, an 8' x 10' hand painted backdrop is the practical choice, while a 5' x 8' suits head and shoulders work and travel, and an 8' x 14' suits long floor sweeps and groups. Size is the decision I would make first, because it shapes where the backdrop lives, how you hang it and which sessions it can hold. Every size we paint is approximate, since each canvas is cut and painted entirely by hand and may be very slightly out of square from the drying process.
The 5' x 8' hand painted backdrop is the most portable of the three, at $497. It suits head and shoulders portraits, half length portraits of a single person, detail work for florists and stylists, and on location sessions where you carry everything yourself. It hangs from one C-stand with one adapter and rolls compactly enough to travel to a venue, a hotel suite or a client's home. It is not the right size for full length portraits of couples or families, because a canvas about 5' wide is narrow for two or more people standing side by side.
The 8' x 10' hand painted backdrop, at $797, gives you room for full length portraits, couples, small families and maternity sessions. It hangs from two C-stands with two adapters, which keeps the canvas steady and gives it a calm, floating presence. Because backdrops hang on the short side, the 8' edge runs across the top and the 10' length falls toward the floor, where it can sweep forward under your subject's feet. It suits a dedicated portrait studio wall, though it asks for more room and more hardware than a photographer who mostly shoots details or travels light may want.
The 8' x 14' hand painted backdrop, at $1,197, carries the same 8' width with a longer fall. The extra length gives you more canvas to sweep across the floor for full length work, flowing gowns and veils, seated groups and any frame where you want floor and wall to read as one surface. It also hangs from two C-stands with two adapters. It suits studios with generous floor space, and it is more canvas than you need if most of your work is cropped at the waist.

A backdrop stand is not included with any Chasing Stone backdrop. Our Floating Photography Backdrop Adapter Mount is $107, is made from heavy duty steel and aluminum, and includes the clamp and grip head that secure a hand painted backdrop to any standard C-stand for a floating look; the C-stand itself is not included. When you shoot outdoors, we recommend weighing each C-stand down with a 30 to 50 lb sandbag, since a large canvas catches the wind like a sail. We recommend one stand and adapter for a 5' x 8', and two stands and two adapters for an 8' x 10' or 8' x 14'. We do not recommend crank or roller systems for hand painted canvas, and our guide to how to hang a photography backdrop covers stands, mounts and walls in detail.

Which Backdrop Colorways Should You Choose, Warm or Cool?
Choose warm colorways if you want backdrops that echo the natural warmth of skin, cool colorways if you want calm, clean separation between subject and wall, and a neutral if you want one backdrop that suits the widest range of clients. A warm backdrop carries red, orange or yellow in its base. A cool backdrop leans blue, green or grey, and the neutrals hold a little of both.
Among the warm colorways, Sandstone is a light peach-brown, Limestone carries light tan tones, Travertine is a warm khaki brown and Clay is a faded terracotta brown. Umber is a dark chestnut brown and Bronzite is a dark, chocolate brown. The warm pinks and mauves form their own small family: Rose Quartz is a soft pastel pink, Rhodonite a bold carnation pink, Hematite a berry toned pink, Lavender Quartz a faded lilac that leans warm, Ametrine a warm, dusty mauve purple and Purpurite a dark mauve with a magenta undertone.

The cool colorways begin with the blues: Celestite is a light sky blue, Lapis a mid denim blue and Azurite a dark marine blue. The greens follow, with Olivine a dusty sage green that leans cool, Celadonite a faint, cool green with a light tan undertone and Serpentine a dark moss green with vibrant green highlights. Slate carries light grey tones, Graphite mid charcoal grey tones and Carbon is a near black with faint charcoal highlights.
The neutrals are the stones that keep the peace in a kit. Mica is a pale grey-brown, Bentonite carries mid taupe tones and Silt carries dark taupe tones. A neutral works quietly behind almost any skin tone or wardrobe, which makes it a generous first choice for a photographer who serves many different clients.

For one backdrop, I would choose the colorway that suits the work you already make most often, leaning toward a neutral or a soft warm if you photograph a wide range of people. For two, a light and a dark of complementary temperature give you two very different moods from one setup. For three, one warm, one cool and one neutral make a well rounded studio, as does a light, a mid and a dark within the same family.
One honest note belongs here. Sandstone is the least forgiving Chasing Stone colorway to photograph, because it is the lightest and its highlights blow out easily, so it rewards careful exposure; every other colorway is very forgiving. Sandstone suits photographers comfortable metering for bright tones, and it is less suited to someone still finding their exposure. For a fuller look at each piece, the complete Chasing Stone color guide goes colorway by colorway, and you can see them all together in the backdrop collection.
Are Pair Any (3) Backdrop Bundles Worth It?
A Pair Any (3) backdrop bundle is worth it if you already know you want three backdrops in one size, because the bundle costs less than three single backdrops bought separately. You choose any three backdrops in one size, duplicates are welcome, and each one is painted by hand to order. The selections are made at checkout.
As of 2026, the Pair Any (3) bundles are priced as follows at regular prices, in USD. Three 5' x 8' backdrops are $1,371, compared with $1,491 bought separately, a difference of $120. Three 8' x 10' backdrops are $2,197, compared with $2,391 for three singles, a difference of $194. Three 8' x 14' backdrops are $3,296, compared with $3,591 for three singles, a difference of $295.
Hardware is chosen separately. On each bundle page the Floating Photography Backdrop Adapter Mount appears as an optional add-on at $107, so a bundle of three 5' x 8' backdrops needs one mount per backdrop you plan to hang at once, and an 8' x 10' or 8' x 14' needs two. If you hang one backdrop at a time and change them between sessions, the mounts you already own can serve the whole set. How the Black Friday sale applies to bundles is shared with the rest of the sale details when it begins.
Our flat lays have bundles of their own. A Pair Any 3 bundle of hand painted flat lays is $405 for three Petite and $455 for three Standard, and any three fabric flat lays are $345. You can see every set in our bundles collection.
A bundle suits studios that offer clients a choice of setting, wedding photographers building a portable portrait kit, and florists who want a light, a mid and a dark behind their arrangements. A bundle does not suit someone still discovering which size works in their space, because all three pieces must share one size. For that photographer, one backdrop first and a second later in the year is just as thoughtful a path.
When to Order Black Friday Photography Backdrops for Holiday Sessions
Order a Black Friday backdrop at least two and a half weeks before you need it, because a Chasing Stone backdrop takes 5 to 7 business days to create and process, and standard shipping adds up to 5 business days more. That is up to 12 business days in all, a little more than two calendar weeks once weekends are counted. Everything I paint is made to order, so each backdrop is cut and painted by hand after you choose it.

The processing times are posted on our FAQ page. Backdrops take 5 to 7 business days, hand painted flat lays take 3 to 5 business days, and fabric flat lays take 1 to 2 business days. Shipping time is in addition to processing time, and standard shipping adds up to 5 business days unless expedited shipping is requested by email at the time of purchase.
Business days run Monday through Friday and exclude U.S. federal holidays. An order placed after 4:00 PM PST begins processing on the following business day, and orders are fulfilled in the sequence they are received. An order holding both flat lays and backdrops may ship in separate parcels on different dates.
Two federal holidays fall inside the 2026 holiday season: Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 26, and Christmas Day on Friday, December 25, according to the 2026 federal holiday schedule published by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. Neither counts as a business day, so any window that includes one of them stretches by a day. New Year's Day falls on Friday, January 1, 2027, and is also a federal holiday.
During busier seasons, updated lead times and any temporary delays from high order volume are noted in the pop up message on the Chasing Stone home page. I would always glance at it before counting backward from a session date. If you have a firm deadline, email info@chasingstone.com with the date and we will reply no later than the next business day.
You can also check out first and then send us your confirmation number, and we will talk through processing and shipping options together. We ship internationally as well, and the same email address is where to begin. If you are planning December sessions, our guide to holiday mini session backdrop ideas pairs well with this one, since the most peaceful December is the one where the backdrop has already been unrolled and tested in your light.
Giving a Hand Painted Backdrop or Flat Lay as a Gift
A hand painted flat lay is the easier gift for most photographers, florists and stylists, while a backdrop is best given to someone whose studio space and style you know well. A backdrop is a significant piece that asks for room and stands. A flat lay is easy to roll and carry, and it suits anyone who photographs details, invitations, rings, florals or products.
Every piece carries the marks of a hand, which is part of why it can mean so much to receive. Our painted surfaces are not food-safe, so food placed on them should be photographed and not eaten. That is worth mentioning to a recipient who styles food.

Every Chasing Stone backdrop arrives individually taped to a cardboard core inside its own reusable, telescopic tube. Flat lays are packed differently: to reduce unnecessary packaging, up to three same-size painted surfaces in one order are rolled together onto a single core in one branded tube. If any part of your order is a gift, the Individual Packaging add-on is $25 and ensures each surface is rolled on its own core and packaged separately.
All of the pieces in one order still travel together in one shipping box to the address given at checkout. Plan to hand them out yourself, or place a separate order for each address. A linen bag is a thoughtful companion to a flat lay, at $39 for a Petite painted surface, $45 for a Standard painted surface and $49 for a fabric surface.
Because made to order pieces cannot be returned, it helps a gift recipient to know the exchange policy. Exchanges are welcome within 30 days of purchase when the piece is unused, undamaged and returned in its original condition with all of its packaging, including the inner cardboard core, the white retaining band and the branded tube. The customer pays return shipping on exchanges, and the process begins with an email to info@chasingstone.com.
There is one more quiet gift inside every order. For every product we sell, one tree is planted through One Tree Planted. We ship in a biodegradable branded paper tube and a recyclable box, without hang tags or unnecessary paper goods.
How Do You Care for a Hand Painted Backdrop?
Care for a hand painted backdrop by storing it tightly rolled, paint side in, on the cardboard core it arrived on, and never crease or fold it. Rolling paint side in means the backdrop unrolls onto its durable, wipeable canvas back. Light dents and creases can be softened by ironing the backside on high heat without steam.

A Chasing Stone backdrop can lie on the floor and be stepped on, which is what makes a sweep possible, though it is worth watching for creases as your subject moves. Dry debris and powder lift away with a soft-bristled brush or a sticky lint roller. Footprints and other oil-based marks come away best with a dry rag or sponge first, followed by gentle use of a white art gum eraser. Most water-based stains can be spot cleaned with a damp cloth, and heavy detergents, excessive friction and saturating the canvas should be avoided.
Hand painted flat lays follow the same spirit. Keep them rolled, never fold them, and iron the backside on low to medium heat for light dents. They may stiffen slightly in cold weather, which rolling them the opposite way will ease, and removable adhesive such as museum putty is safe on them.
The cotton canvas has a heavy, luxurious feel, yet it remains light enough for one person to handle, roll and carry. As Jose Villa wrote of our surfaces, "Chasing Stone has been a favorite of mine since I first tried them. Not only do they add texture and style to my subject matter, they are easy to take with me wherever I go!" Our guide to traveling with photography backdrops goes further into rolling, carrying and storing them between sessions.
When the sale opens, I hope this guide lets you choose slowly and with intention, knowing your size, your palette and your timing before the day arrives. Which stone are you dreaming of unrolling in your own light this winter, and what will you create on it?

What is the best backdrop size for portrait photography, 5x8 or 8x10?
An 8' x 10' backdrop is the better choice for full length portraits of one or two people, couples and small families, and it hangs from two C-stands. A 5' x 8' backdrop suits head and shoulders portraits, single subjects, detail work and travel, and hangs from one stand. Choose an 8' x 14' for long floor sweeps and groups. All Chasing Stone sizes are approximate because each canvas is cut and painted by hand.
Is a hand painted backdrop worth it?
A hand painted backdrop is worth it for photographers who want real painted texture that reads like stone or plaster on camera, a canvas they can roll and travel with, and a piece made to order by one artist. Chasing Stone backdrops start at $497 for 5' x 8' as of 2026, so a single backdrop may be more than a hobbyist needs. The Black Friday sale at 25% off is one of only two sales Chasing Stone holds each year.
Can I send a Chasing Stone backdrop or flat lay as a gift?
Yes. Chasing Stone backdrops always ship individually on their own core inside a reusable telescopic tube. Flat lays in the same size are normally rolled together on one core, so add Individual Packaging for $25 to have each surface rolled and packaged separately. All items in one order ship in a single box to the checkout address. Exchanges are welcome within 30 days if a piece is unused and returned with all original packaging.
Is a backdrop stand included with a Chasing Stone backdrop?
No, the stand is purchased separately. Chasing Stone recommends one C-stand and one Floating Photography Backdrop Adapter Mount for a 5' x 8' backdrop, and two stands with two adapters for an 8' x 10' or 8' x 14'. The adapter mount is $107 as of 2026, includes the clamp and grip head, and is also offered as an optional add-on on each Pair Any (3) bundle page.
