Gifts for Photographers 2026: A Guide for Florists and Stylists Too

By Jennifer Kidd — Chasing Stone Co-Founder

The most meaningful gifts for photographers in 2026 are often the quiet tools that shape every frame, and for most photographers, florists and stylists that means a surface: a hand painted canvas backdrop for portraits, a stain resistant fabric flat lay for the florist, or a hand painted flat lay for the stationer. At Chasing Stone, every backdrop and hand painted flat lay is painted by hand in Orange County, California, by me, Jennifer Kidd, the founder and artist. I spend my days translating crumbling stone and weathered plaster onto canvas, and I have come to believe that the ground behind a subject carries as much feeling as the light that falls on it, which is why a surface makes such a personal present for someone who makes images.

Quick Answer

The best gifts for photographers in 2026 are surfaces they will use in every session. For a wedding or portrait photographer, give a Chasing Stone hand painted backdrop in a soft neutral, $497 for the 5' x 8' or $797 for the 8' x 10'. For a florist, give a stain resistant fabric flat lay at $125. For a stationer, give a hand painted flat lay at $145 Petite or $165 Standard. Everything is made to order, so allow processing plus shipping time.

What Are the Best Gifts for Photographers in 2026?

The best gifts for photographers in 2026 are the surfaces their work is composed against, because a backdrop or flat lay appears in every frame of every session for years. Equipment such as straps, memory cards and lenses is useful, but most photographers already hold firm opinions about their gear, so a guess can easily miss. A surface is chosen as much by feeling as by specification, and a thoughtful choice reads as a gift from someone who has looked closely at the recipient's work.

A Chasing Stone painted canvas also has a long working life when it is cared for well. Our backdrops are stored rolled tightly on the cardboard core they arrive on, they can lie on the studio floor and be stepped on during a session, and dry dust lifts away with a soft brush or a lint roller. A backdrop received this winter can still be on a spring wedding calendar and a summer of mini sessions, which is why I think of it as closer to a piece of studio furniture than a gadget.

There is also the simple fact that each Chasing Stone surface is made by a person. Every backdrop and hand painted flat lay is dreamt up and painted entirely by hand on premium cotton canvas, with materials sourced in the USA, so no two are identical. For a recipient who spends their own days making things by hand, that quality tends to be recognized on sight.

A surface gift suits the photographer, florist or stylist who already owns the essential gear and wants their images to feel more personal. It suits less well someone who has asked for one specific piece of equipment, and in that case the kindest gift is the one they named. If you would like to understand the whole range first, our complete color guide to every Chasing Stone backdrop describes each colorway and the sessions it suits.

What Should You Give a Wedding or Portrait Photographer?

For a wedding or portrait photographer, the most meaningful gift is a Chasing Stone hand painted canvas backdrop, and an 8' x 10' backdrop in a soft neutral is the choice I would make when I cannot ask. As of 2026 we paint three sizes, all approximate because each canvas is cut and painted by hand: the 5' x 8' at $497, the 8' x 10' at $797 and the 8' x 14' at $1,197. The 8' x 10' suits couples, families and full length portraits without asking for a large studio, which is why it is the most forgiving size for a surprise.

The 5' x 8' backdrop suits headshots, single portraits and photographers who travel to every session, since it is the most compact to carry. The 8' x 14' backdrop suits photographers with generous studio space who photograph groups or wider compositions. If the recipient works mostly in small home studios or hotel rooms, the 8' x 14' is likely more canvas than they need, and the 5' x 8' or 8' x 10' is the kinder choice.

For color, I would lean toward the soft neutrals when you cannot see the full portfolio. Limestone is described on our site as light tan tones, Bentonite as mid-taupe tones, Mica as a pale grey-brown and Slate as light grey tones. Quiet neutrals like these tend to sit behind a subject without competing with skin or a white dress, which is why I think of them as the gentlest choices for a gift.

One honest note from the studio about Sandstone, our light peach-brown colorway. Sandstone is the least forgiving colorway in the collection to photograph, because it is the lightest and its highlights blow out easily. Sandstone is a beautiful gift for a photographer who already knows and loves it, and a less certain one for a surprise. All of our other colorways are very forgiving.

For a photographer who cares deeply about color, the Calibrite ColorChecker Passport Photo 2 is a thoughtful companion gift. According to Calibrite, the ColorChecker Passport Photo 2 replaced the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport 2 and folds four targets into a pocket sized case: a gray balance target, a white balance target, the 24 patch ColorChecker Classic and a creative enhancement target. Calibrite explains that it can build custom DNG or ICC camera profiles for a specific camera, lens and light, with a plug-in for Adobe Lightroom Classic. When the backdrop behind a client is a hand painted colorway, a color target helps a photographer hold that color steady from the first frame to the final edit.

How Do You Hang a Backdrop You Give as a Gift?

A Chasing Stone backdrop hangs from C-stands with our Floating Adapter Mount, and a backdrop arrives without a stand or a mount, so check what the recipient owns before you order. The Floating Photography Backdrop Adapter Mount is $107, made from heavy duty steel and aluminum, and includes the clamp and grip head. We recommend one stand and one mount for a 5' x 8' backdrop, and two stands with two mounts for an 8' x 10' or 8' x 14' backdrop for balance.

Backdrops hang on the short side, and the mount secures the canvas to a standard C-stand so that it appears to float like a work of art. We do not recommend crank or roller systems for our canvases. Our guide to how to hang a photography backdrop with stands, mounts, tracks and walls explains each option in detail if you would like to understand the setup before giving it.

If the recipient owns no stands at all, a C-stand is a generous gift in its own right. Matthews Studio Equipment describes its 40 inch C+Stand with Spring Loaded Turtle Base as including the grip head and arm, with a maximum height of 118 inches, which is tall enough to lift an 8' x 10' backdrop well clear of the floor. Two of these stands, two adapter mounts and an 8' x 10' backdrop together make a complete floating backdrop setup.

For outdoor sessions, we recommend weighing each C-stand down with sandbags of roughly 30 to 50 pounds. A pair of sandbags is a modest addition that shows real care for a photographer who often works in open air, on beaches, lawns and rooftops.

What Are the Best Gifts for Florists Who Photograph Their Work?

The best gift for a florist who photographs their work is a stain resistant fabric flat lay, because a florist's studio is wet and busy and a fabric surface is built to shrug off water. Chasing Stone fabric flat lays are made in vegan wool or textured velvet, measure approximately 34" x 25.5" and cost $125 each as of 2026, or any three for $345. These fabric surfaces are not painted, and their color comes from the fabric itself.

Each Chasing Stone fabric colorway is protected with the only patented GREENGUARD Gold Certified stain proofing compound, which is non-toxic and free of formaldehyde and forever chemicals like PFAS and PFOAs. The protection is infused into each fiber to protect from within, instead of applied as a finishing top coat that diminishes with time. In our own words on the site, its resilience against stains and moisture will never fade, and never harm you or our waterways.

If the certification is new to you, UL Solutions, which runs the GREENGUARD program, explains that the mark means a product has been tested in controlled chambers and meets strict limits for chemical emissions. UL adds that Gold certified products emit even lower levels than the standard certification allows. For a florist working long hours in a closed studio, that care in the materials matters.

Two fabric colorways are especially kind to floral work and are in stock as I write. Yarrow is a multi-toned cream in vegan wool, with just enough tone variation to add depth without competing with the arrangement. Dogwood is a warm white in textured velvet, and our textured velvet helps hide the fingerprints and smudges that form when stems and vessels are repositioned during styling. Fabric stock changes often, so a quick look at the collection before ordering is wise.

A fabric flat lay suits florists who photograph bouquets, boutonnieres and details from above on a work table, and our step by step guide to styling flat lays for florists is a lovely thing to send along with one. A florist who photographs tall arrangements, arches or tablescapes needs something larger behind the work, and for them a soft neutral hand painted backdrop turns a studio corner into a lasting portfolio wall.

A beautiful companion gift for a florist is a pair of shears made to last for decades. The FELCO 2 is a Swiss made bypass pruner with a hardened steel cutting blade and forged aluminum handles, and FELCO notes that its blades, springs and parts are replaceable, so the pruner can be repaired rather than replaced. FELCO also gives a lifetime warranty on all forged aluminum parts, which feels right for a gift meant to last as long as the craft itself.

Gifts for Stationers, Product Stylists and Flat Lay Artists

For a stationer, jewelry stylist or product photographer, the best gift is a Chasing Stone hand painted flat lay, because paper, metal and glass need a surface with presence and texture beneath them. Each hand painted flat lay is painted by hand on rollable, artist's grade canvas with our hand frayed edges, always flexible and always wrinkle free because of the way we make it. The Standard measures approximately 35" x 28" for $165, and the Petite measures approximately 26" x 20" for $145, as of 2026.

The Standard hand painted flat lay suits a stationer who photographs full invitation suites with ribbon, wax and a stray botanical. The Petite suits a stylist who frames a single card, a ring box or a perfume bottle in close detail. If the recipient often photographs on location, the Petite is lighter and simpler to carry, and both sizes roll for travel.

Each Chasing Stone hand painted flat lay is named for a place, and three are especially gentle choices for paper goods. Santorini is a natural white with pink-toned grit, Chateau is a faint dove grey with subtle, light blue highlights, and Matera is a warm taupe with slightly cooler undertones. Each lets cream paper, blind embossing and fine calligraphy read clearly, while carrying enough painted texture that a suite looks considered. Our article on how stationery designers photograph their work shows how a surface like this can carry a whole season of suites.

A small and practical gift to tuck beside a flat lay is a block of removable museum putty, which stylists use to hold a ring upright or tilt a card toward the light. Removable adhesive like museum putty is safe on our hand painted flat lays. Ready America describes QuakeHOLD! Museum Putty as removable, reusable and non-toxic, and says it will not leave marks or residue on surfaces.

One honest note matters here more than anywhere else in this guide: Chasing Stone painted surfaces and backdrops are not food-safe, and food placed on them should not be eaten. A hand painted flat lay does not suit a food stylist, baker or cake designer who photographs dishes that will be served. For them, a stain resistant fabric flat lay is the more practical gift, because spills roll off the face and blot away, and anything meant to be eaten can stay on its own plate or board. A hand painted flat lay suits perfume, jewelry, ceramics and stationery beautifully.

Is a Pair Any (3) Bundle Worth Giving?

A Pair Any (3) bundle is worth giving when the gift is for a studio, a team or someone building a collection, because three surfaces chosen together cost less than the same three chosen one at a time. As of 2026, the backdrop bundles are $1,371 for three 5' x 8' backdrops, $2,197 for the Pair Any (3) 8' x 10' backdrop bundle and $3,296 for three 8' x 14' backdrops. Duplicates are welcome, and the recipient's palette can guide every choice.

Each backdrop bundle is simply any three backdrops in one size, and the Floating Adapter Mount is an optional $107 add-on. If the recipient owns no mounts, adding one or two answers the question of how the first canvases will hang, which is often the missing piece in a backdrop gift.

For flat lays, a Pair Any 3 Standard hand painted bundle is $455, a Pair Any 3 Petite bundle is $405, and a Pair Any (3) Fabric bundle is $345. A trio built around one warm, one cool and one soft neutral surface gives a stylist enough range for a whole season of work.

A bundle suits a partner helping a photographer open a new studio, a team pooling for a shared kit, or a stylist whose favorite colors you already know. A bundle suits less well a surprise for someone whose palette you have never seen, since three surfaces need to sit happily beside one another. In that case, a single surface chosen with care is the gentler gift.

Small Gifts Under $200: Linen Bags, Care Kits and Individual Packaging

The best small gifts under $200 for a photographer or stylist are a Chasing Stone linen bag, a simple care kit, or a single flat lay with Individual Packaging. Our linen bags are handmade locally in Los Angeles from 100% natural slub linen, and each carries up to three surfaces with an adjustable shoulder strap. The linen bag for painted surfaces is $39 for Petite or $45 for Standard, in Sand or Slate, and the linen bag for fabric surfaces is $49.

A linen bag suits a stylist who carries surfaces between a car, a venue and a client's table, since it keeps the kit together and protected. Our care guide suggests dry cleaning or a cold hand wash with a mild detergent. A linen bag is less useful for someone who never takes their surfaces out of the studio.

A care kit costs little and gets used constantly. Our FAQ recommends keeping a white art gum eraser, a soft-bristled brush or chip brush, a terry cloth rag and a lint roller or masking tape on hand for quick touch ups. On a backdrop, footprints and oil-based marks come away with a dry rag first and then gentle use of the eraser, and most water-based marks lift with a damp cloth. Gathered into a pouch with a handwritten note, those four tools make a thoughtful stocking gift for anyone who already owns a painted surface.

If you are giving more than one surface, the Individual Packaging add-on is worth knowing about. To reduce unnecessary packaging, we normally roll up to three same-size flat lays on one core inside one branded tube. Adding Individual Packaging, $25, gives each surface its own core and separate branded packaging for gifting, and everything still arrives in one shipping box.

You may also see Chasing Stone Seconds, second quality fabric flat lays at $110, which carry a slight imperfection or manufacturing defect that does not affect the functionality or durability of the piece. Seconds suit a buyer choosing for themselves, who is happy to trade a small flaw for a lower price. Because all sales of Seconds are final, they suit a gift less well, and a first quality surface is the safer choice when an exchange might be needed.

How Do You Choose a Backdrop Color for Someone Else?

The simplest way to choose a backdrop color for someone else is to look at their recent work first and match the temperature you see there, and when in doubt, choose a soft neutral. Spend a few minutes with the recipient's portfolio or social feed and notice what recurs behind their subjects. If the work leans warm, with golden light, cream linen and glowing skin, a warm neutral such as Limestone or Mica will feel as though it already belongs in their body of work.

If the work leans cool, with grey morning light, architecture and white fabric, Slate is likely to sit naturally within it. If the work is confident and color forward, you might reach for a colorway with more voice, such as our light sky blue Celestite or our dusty sage green Olivine. A bold colorway suits a photographer with a clear signature palette, and it suits less well someone whose style you are still getting to know.

It also helps to think about who stands in front of the backdrop. A wedding photographer photographs every kind of complexion over a season, so a soft neutral lets each client remain the warmest or coolest thing in the frame. A florist or stylist photographs objects whose colors change every week, so a surface that recedes politely serves them across garden roses, autumn branches and winter evergreens alike.

Our exchange policy offers reassurance when you are choosing for someone else. Because every item is made to order, returns are kindly declined, but exchanges are welcomed within 30 days of purchase if the item is unused, undamaged and returned with all of its packaging: the inner cardboard core, the white retaining band and the branded packaging tube. The customer covers return shipping on exchanges, so it is kind to tell the recipient the window exists and to suggest they keep the packaging until they are sure.

When Should You Order Photographer Gifts for Holiday Delivery in 2026?

Order a Chasing Stone backdrop at least three working weeks before the date you need it, because backdrops take five to seven business days to make and standard shipping adds up to five more business days. Our FAQ lists processing at one to two business days for fabric flat lays, three to five business days for hand painted flat lays and five to seven business days for backdrops. Shipping time is always in addition to processing time.

Business days run Monday through Friday and exclude U.S. federal holidays. In the 2026 holiday season, that means Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26 and Christmas Day on Friday, December 25 are not counted. Orders placed after 4:00 PM PST begin processing the following business day, orders are fulfilled in the sequence they are received, and any temporary delays from high order volume are noted in the pop up message on our home page.

If your gift has a fixed date, such as a studio opening or a holiday party, please email info@chasingstone.com with your deadline. We will reply no later than the next business day to talk through processing and shipping options, and you are also welcome to check out first and then email us with your confirmation number. We ship internationally as well, and the same email address is the place to begin.

Chasing Stone holds only two sales each year, a summer sale and Black Friday, and the Black Friday sale is 25% off. The details are shared on our site and with our mailing list when the sale begins. Our Black Friday guide to photography backdrops explains how to choose a backdrop and how our processing times fit around a holiday date.

A Gift That Gives Back

Every Chasing Stone gift carries a small second gift inside it: one tree planted through the nonprofit One Tree Planted for every product sold, part of the commitment to sustainability that has guided our studio since day one. Those trees help to restore and rewild devastated forestland around the world. For a recipient who cares about stewardship, that detail is often the first thing they notice.

Our packaging is minimal by intention. Backdrops arrive taped to a cardboard core inside a reusable, telescopic tube, flat lays arrive rolled on a core with a retaining band and ribbon inside our branded paper tube, and we omit unnecessary paper goods and hang tags. We were the first styling surface maker to offer entirely biodegradable packaging, with our original branded paper tube and a recyclable cardboard shipping box.

Portability is at the heart of everything we make, and the photographer Jose Villa put it simply: "Chasing Stone has been a favorite of mine since I first tried them. Not only do they add texture and style to my subject matter, they are easy to take with me wherever I go!" A surface that rolls up and travels to every shoot is a gift that follows its new owner wherever their work leads.

Many photographers and stylists also spend the last weeks of the year looking back over their portfolio, and some will quietly decide the gift is for themselves. If that is you, everything in this guide applies with one lovely difference: you already know your palette, so you can choose beyond the safe neutrals and build the trio you have been dreaming of. Whoever you are choosing for, I hope you find a surface that feels as though it was made with them in mind, because in a very real way it will be. When the canvas unrolls in their studio for the first time, what beauty do you imagine they will create with it?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gift for a photographer in 2026?

The best gift for a photographer in 2026 is a surface they will use in every session, such as a Chasing Stone hand painted canvas backdrop in a soft neutral colorway. Backdrops are $497 for the 5' x 8', $797 for the 8' x 10' and $1,197 for the 8' x 14', all approximate in size. What are good gifts for wedding photographers?

Good gifts for wedding photographers include an 8' x 10' Chasing Stone hand painted backdrop at $797, which suits couples and full length bridal portraits, and a Floating Adapter Mount at $107 for each C-stand. A color target such as the Calibrite ColorChecker Passport Photo 2 helps keep color consistent. For a smaller gift, consider a linen bag from $39 or a hand painted flat lay for ring and invitation details.

What is a good gift for a florist?

A stain resistant fabric flat lay is a practical gift for a florist who photographs arrangements in a wet, busy studio. Chasing Stone fabric flat lays are made in vegan wool or textured velvet, measure approximately 34" x 25.5" and cost $125 each, or any three for $345. Their stain proofing is GREENGUARD Gold Certified and infused into each fiber. A FELCO 2 pruner makes a lovely companion gift.

What are good gifts for photographers under $200?

Chasing Stone offers several gifts under $200: a linen bag for painted surfaces at $39 or $45, a linen bag for fabric surfaces at $49, the Floating Photography Backdrop Adapter Mount at $107, a fabric flat lay at $125, and a hand painted flat lay at $145 Petite or $165 Standard. A small care kit with a white art gum eraser, soft brush, terry cloth rag and lint roller costs even less.

How long does a Chasing Stone order take to arrive before the holidays?

Chasing Stone processing takes one to two business days for fabric flat lays, three to five for hand painted flat lays and five to seven for backdrops, and standard shipping adds up to five business days. Business days exclude weekends and U.S. federal holidays, including Thanksgiving on November 26 and Christmas Day on December 25 in 2026. For a fixed date, email info@chasingstone.com with your deadline.

Can I gift wrap or package Chasing Stone surfaces separately?

Yes. Up to three same-size Chasing Stone flat lays are normally rolled on one core in a single branded tube to reduce packaging. Adding Individual Packaging for $25 gives each surface its own core and separate branded packaging for gifting, and everything still arrives together in one shipping box. Backdrops already arrive individually taped to a cardboard core inside a reusable, telescopic tube.

Is a hand painted flat lay or a fabric flat lay a better gift for a food stylist?

A fabric flat lay is the more practical gift for a food stylist. Chasing Stone hand painted flat lays and backdrops are not food-safe, so food placed on them should not be eaten. A stain resistant fabric flat lay at $125 lets spills roll off and blot away, and food meant to be eaten can stay on its own plate. Hand painted surfaces suit stationery, jewelry, perfume and ceramics.
